- New Geshema research program
Gehsema Tenzin Dolkar la and Geshema Phuntsok Dolkar la has got the opportunity to participate the new geshema research project in Buddhist philosophy. The historic research project is organized by the Geluk International Foundation which recently announced seats for 30 Geshes and 5 Geshemas to do three-year research projects on five topics of Buddhist philosophy. The individual participants will work on their subjects and will submit quarterly reports under the guidance of their advisors. At the end of
three years, each will submit a final thesis.
The Tibetan Nuns Project formally announced the program and contacted
the five nunneries that regularly participate in the annual Jang Gonchoe
month-long debate session and have Geshema graduates – Dolma Ling, Geden
Choeling, Jamyang Choeling (all three in the Dharmasala area), Jangchup
Choeling in South India, and Kopan in Nepal. The selection of research
topics by the Geshemas was done on a first-come-first-serve basis.
In order to qualify for the program, the Geshemas had to have obtained
60% in their final Geshema exams, as well as to meet other criteria and
supply formal documents. The Tibetan Nuns Project helped to coordinate
the application process by the Geshemas.
Geshema Tenzin Dolkar: “It is my first time to participate in this research project. We were first given only one seat to our nunnery and I got the opportunity to participate among all other Geshima in the nunnery. I am excited at first. There are some options for me to choose in which field i want to do my research,i chose Madhyamika. The first reason i choose madhyamika is that i have huge interest in this subject as it discuss the one of the main important buddhist philosophical thought and the details of shastra. It has three courses itself and to research is to study from all other sect interpretations as well. So I am glad to be in touch with Buddhist texts to have deeper knowledge on Madhyamika. I hope to make good research papers to help Buddhist learners around the world. Also I would like to give my best in this project paving the path to other nuns in the nunnery as well. It has just begun and right now we are facing litte issues with recruiting resources on texts as the pandemic has put us in lockdown and situations are quite serious in the Mundgod. But hoping for the best.”
